Gulbenkian Foundation Invests in Cape Verde and Mozambique

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation will invest approximately €900,000 (99.2 million escudos) over the next three years to support clinical research projects in Cape Verde and Mozambique, the institution announced today.

In a statement, the Gulbenkian Foundation informed that the projects cover health areas such as bacterial infections, antibiotic resistance, diagnosis of serious hematological diseases, and early diagnosis of heart failure.

The funding, included in the “More Research” competition, is intended for researchers from Portuguese-speaking African Countries (PALOP).

In Cape Verde, according to the Lisbon-based institution, the support will be channeled to two projects based at the Agostinho Neto University Hospital (HUAN) in Praia.

One of them, “Prepara-m.CV”, led by researcher Isabel Araújo from the University of Cape Verde (Uni-CV), aims to optimize antibiotic prescription in pediatrics through rapid diagnoses, combating the growing bacterial resistance.

The second project, designated “HemaPro-CV” and coordinated by Pamela Borges, focuses on creating a molecular diagnostic platform for blood cancers, such as leukemias and lymphomas, enabling faster and more targeted therapies.

According to the Gulbenkian Foundation, the initiative aims to “strengthen the quality and equity in the provision of healthcare,” integrating scientists from these countries into global knowledge networks and empowering local institutions.

In addition to the two Cape Verdean researchers, three researchers from Mozambique will also be supported by the Gulbenkian Foundation.
