Africa-Press – Cape verde. Historian António Correia e Silva said in the Cidade Velha that the history of Cabo Verde is made by the “denial of freedom and overcoming barriers” and the slavery is “a founding experience” for Cabo Verdeans.

As a lecturer on the theme “For an ethnography of freedom in the history of Cabo Verde”, promoted in the context of the 11th Week of the Republic, which runs until Thursday, the 20th, in another initiative by the Presidency of the Republic, Correia e Silva said that freedom was felt throughout the history of Cabo Verde, “felt and desired” by several actors who inhabited the country.

The historian proposes to go through the history of Cabo Verde with “mouths of seven leagues” to try to see the polarizing matrix situations, which created experiences and segregated ways of conceptualizing and feeling freedom, emphasizing that the history of Cabo Verde begins in the Cidade Velha, founded by trafficking and for slave trafficking.

“Slavery is a founding experience for Cabo Verdeans and it lasts in Cabo Verde for at least three four centuries, not only from a legal point of view, but from a social relationship. And it is good that we are symbolically reflecting that the foundation of Cabo Verde has to do with slavery,” the historian said.
