Africa-Press – Cape verde. The director of the Blood Bank Service at the Agostinho Neto University Hospital (HUAN), Linette Andrade, assured today that the Blood Bank currently has a “stable stock” of blood.
This is due, according to the same source, to the carrying out of several campaigns at different universities, highlighting, however, that “it is never too much” to donate blood, especially in Cape Verde.
Linette Andrade, who spoke to Inforpress on the sidelines of the World Hemophilia Day event, highlighted that there are more critical periods when the hospital needs more blood, such as during festive seasons and school holidays.
“There have already been critical cases in which we are looking not for the blood type, but for the platelet, which is a component of the blood, so in some cases to place the platelet in an adult person, six donors are needed, in situations like this we appeal through our social media page for specific donations”, highlighted Linette Andrade.
According to the same source, blood types O and O negative are most in need, in the case of O negative, it was pointed out that it can be transfused into anyone, which is why it is more difficult to obtain.
There is, he continued, “a lot of prejudice” among people in donating blood, which is due, he stressed, to the lack of information on the subject and people being more aware of the cause.
“We are always available to provide clarification on the subject, but we need more means of communication to publicize the importance of blood donation, that is, for a voluntary blood donation, as, in conclusion, donating blood is an act of solidarity that can save lives.
