Africa-Press – Cape verde. The president of the Cultural Heritage Institute (IPC), Ana Samira Baessa, announced today that the inauguration of the works at the Dona Maria Pia Lighthouse, located in the city of Praia, is scheduled for September.
Speaking to Inforpress, the president of the IPC reported that the two-month rehabilitation works on the lighthouse are progressing well.
After the physical structure has been restored, the museography part will be carried out, and the lighthouse will house a small interpretation center.
Infrastructures to support tourism will be created, such as restaurant areas and information centers, with the aim of enhancing the tourist and cultural attractiveness of the location.
This project is part of the promotion of the Historic Lighthouses of Cape Verde, a structuring initiative developed in partnership between the Ministry of Culture and Creative Industries, through the Institute of Cultural Heritage, and the Ministry of the Sea, through the Maritime and Port Institute.
According to Ana Samira Baessa, the next lighthouse to be rehabilitated will be Porto Inglês, on the island of Maio, whose project is already ready, and later will be the Boi Lighthouse located in Janela, on the island of Santo Antão, all scheduled to open this year.
These interventions will contribute to reinforcing the lighthouses as an icon of navigation and a heritage element of high value, fully integrating them into the strategy of enhancing the historical and cultural heritage of Cape Verde.
The financing is provided by Spanish Cooperation, through the Spanish Agency for Cooperation and Development (Aecid), covering the rehabilitation of eight historic lighthouses in the archipelago.
