Africa-Press – Cape verde. The President of the Republic, José Maria Neves, alerted this Sunday, International Family Day, to the need for more social solidarity and the adoption of social policy measures to improve the living conditions of Cape Verdean families, who are going through trials and difficulties in the face of the current situation, which is reflected in the increase in poverty, with the rise, for example, of prices.
“I would like, on this occasion, to greet all Cape Verdean families, residents and in the diaspora, expressing my solidarity recognition and a message of hope for the future in this great family with a few centuries of history that is Cape Verde”, he said.
JMN recalled that the family is the basic unit and foundation of a society, which is why he defended the need to recognize the nuclear role that it has in a society, where an environment based on values such as culture, solidarity, fraternity, commitment, tolerance and respect for difference.
“We are facing a context in which families are becoming smaller and the number of households with only one father or mother, especially the latter, the so-called single-parent families continue to grow. Our interpretation of this phenomenon is that there is a need to focus on social protection”.
the most important school
The Head of State also highlighted that the family must be the first and most important “school and model” of good principles and values in the education of children, adolescents and young people.
JMN also highlighted the importance of responsible motherhood and fatherhood for the success of men of the future, considering, on the other hand, that it is “unacceptable” that children continue to be victims of various types of aggression that, unfortunately, still happen within the family and that must be fought.
“Domestic violence is also to be repudiated, for its consequences, and for setting a bad example for children,” he said.
hardship and poverty
Given the situation of covid-19, war in Ukraine and the context of cyclical drought for three years, JMN recognized that Cape Verdean families have gone through numerous trials, which have negatively impacted Cape Verdean society with the rise in prices of products. and poverty in the country.
“There are many families that go through trials, but there are also many Cape Verdeans who go through difficulties because they don’t have a family. Thus, I appeal, on this day and on all others, that we value families, be more empathetic with our neighbors, practice solidarity and contribute to social inclusion for all who are going through a moment of distress and ordeal.” , appealed.
He also recalled that poverty in Cape Verde has a female face, and many households that have gone through times of need are headed by women who are dedicated, above all, to subsistence agriculture, livestock, street vending or other similar activities.
Therefore, he defended the need for social policy measures to improve the living conditions of families, especially the most disadvantaged, promoting social inclusion.
Remember that International Family Day is marked on May 15th and was established by the United Nations to discuss relevant issues to ensure the well-being of families around the world.
The date was celebrated for the first time in 1994.
