Africa-Press – Cape verde. Four Spaniards are detained in Praia, the Cape Verdean capital, accused of international drug trafficking, after being surprised on the high seas with five tons of cocaine, judicial sources cited by Rádio de Cabo Verde (RCV) said this Tuesday.

The four detainees were heard in court in Praia and agreed to extradition to Spain, which should be processed in the coming weeks, judicial sources added today (12/12).

According to the same sources, the Spaniards were near the port of Praia, where they fled on a speedboat after being chased on the high seas by authorities who intercepted them with the drugs.

In a statement, the French maritime prefecture of the Atlantic today refers to the arrest of the four suspects, in Cape Verde, following the interception that took place on Wednesday, December 6th, “of 5,132 kilos of cocaine, with a market value of France, estimated at more than 330 million euros.”

The operation involving French navy assets took place in an area of ​​the Gulf of Guinea, not specified in the document, based on information transmitted by the Maritime Analysis and Operations Center (Narcotics) (MAOC-N), in Lisbon, by the anti-drug agency ( DEA) North American.

The intervention team was supported by a maritime surveillance drone and “the drugs, seized on board the boat, were then transferred to the patrol boat to be destroyed”, details the statement.

“The instruments of international judicial cooperation immediately implemented by the Public Prosecutor’s Office in Brest”, in France, “allowed the referral to the Anti-Drug Prosecutor’s Office in Madrid (Spain) and, subsequently, the arrest of the four alleged drug traffickers by the Cape Verde authorities ”, he adds.

The French authority classifies as “perfect” the “cooperation between national and international actors in the fight against drugs, which allowed this exceptional result to be achieved”.
