Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Cultural Heritage Institute (IPC) launched a training course on cultural heritage interpretation for tour guides this Monday in Praia, aiming to strengthen cultural tourism in Santiago.
The initiative runs until September 24th in partnership with the National Tourism Institute (INT) and the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID).
IPC President Ana Samira Baessa explained to reporters that this training is part of the project to promote Cape Verde’s historic lighthouses, which plans to hold four training sessions by 2026, the first of which will involve 19 participants from Santiago Island.
“The goal is to equip guides, both those already certified and those in the process of becoming certified, with tools and knowledge about heritage spaces, museums, archaeological sites, and restored monuments, so they can convey to tourists a more accurate interpretation of Cape Verdean history and culture,” she emphasized.
According to the director, in recent years, several buildings and monuments have been renovated, new museums created, and research has been carried out, both in underwater heritage and in terrestrial archaeology, resulting in new knowledge about Cape Verde’s history.
“We want this content to be shared with the guides, who are the professionals who use these spaces on a daily basis. This training allows them to provide a higher quality service and contribute to the appreciation of our cultural heritage,” she emphasized.
The course takes place over the course of a week and, according to Ana Samira Baessa, will be replicated on other islands to reach as many tourism professionals as possible.
“By December, we will have a second event, and next year, two more, always with the involvement of tourism and IPC technicians who have been working on the creation of museums and the restoration of cultural heritage,” she explained.
