Jorge Santos admits prohibitive prices on trips to Cape Verde: “Act of courage”

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Minister of Communities, Jorge Santos, said that the crisis, which has had impacts all over the world, has been a constraint on the mobility of Cape Verdeans in the diaspora, given the “prohibitive prices”. For a family of four or six, traveling to Cape Verde is an act of courage, he said.

As he advanced, in an interview with Inforpress, the war has caused an energy crisis and the consequent vertiginous rise in the price of energy, with a direct impact, not only in Cape Verde, but also in the host countries of Cape Verdean communities.

“This has had consequences, not only in terms of their cost of living, but also in terms of the costs of their mobility”, he said, maintaining that, at the moment, as it is a time for thousands of Cape Verdeans to come to the archipelago, it has been conditioned by the prices of trips that have multiplied and “are prohibitive”.

“Act of Courage”

“Traveling from Europe to Cape Verde today is an act of courage for families of four to six people, who, in order to reach the country, have to make investments of more than eight thousand euros, which worries us”, pointed out Jorge Santos.

Even so, he pointed out an increase in the confidence of the communities, with reflections in the increase in deposits, not only in term, but also in the financial, economic and social remittances that have been sent to the archipelago.

No urgent intervention requests

Despite the context, Jorge Santos guarantees that, at the moment, no request for urgent intervention has been made to the Government of Cape Verde by Cape Verdeans in the diaspora, highlighting the resilience of communities abroad.

“We are in permanent contact with the entire associative movement of our communities, where any need is felt at first hand, as well as in our diplomatic representations”, he assured.
