Leidina Semedo: A talent on the rise

Africa-Press – Cape verde. Leidina Semedo, 16 years old, born in the municipality of São Miguel, in the interior of Santiago, is a sporting talent when it comes to football.

Leidina, or simply Leidy, is an athlete from the Academy of Sports, Education and Culture – ADEC, a Calheta de São Miguel team that has gradually conquered its space on the pitch.

Recently, she was called up to the Cape Verde senior women’s football team, a responsibility she was not expecting.

Despite her young age, in the field, the 16-year-old teenager shows a lot of maturity and does not let herself be intimidated.

Best female player 2021/22

Leidy, who wears the ADEC jersey number 4, was considered the Best Player of the National Women’s Football Championship season 2021/22 for a “spectacular” competition in favor of her team and her municipality São Miguel.

One of the aspects that most attracts attention of this central defender is his technical capacity, passing quality and the ability to play with the ball controlled in the opponent’s midfield.

So much so that his performance in the 2021/22 season made his community proud.

path in the selection

Satisfied to be part of the Cape Verde women’s football team today, the teenager promises to work to “always make proud” those who believe in her.

Building her path little by little, Leidy has already debuted in an international championship. She was one of the athletes from the senior women’s soccer team in Cape Verde that participated, between 20 and 29 January, in the Union of West African Federations (UFOA) tournament at the Marcelo Leitão stadium, on Sal island.

The national team, which reached the final of an international tournament for the first time, missed out on winning the title after losing to “Leoas de Teranga” from Senegal; managed, however, the best ranking ever since in 2020, their last participation in the UFOA tournament, did not pass the group stage.

It’s just the beginning…

As one of the athletes who extended Cape Verde’s steps at UFOA, the journey of this young soccer player from São Miguel is just beginning.

Leidy believes that she still has “a lot to give” in sport, in particular women’s football, both nationally and internationally.
