Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Cape Verde Cultural Center (CCCV), in Lisbon, opened its doors to host a concert by the Orquestra Geração, as part of the program to commemorate the 47th anniversary of Cape Verde’s Independence, marked on July 5th.
The concert by Orquestra Geração – Camerata de Loures, which took place on Saturday afternoon/evening, 02, was attended by the Cape Verdean ambassador to Portugal, Eurico Monteiro, and a full room, and is also part of the celebrations of the third anniversary of the CCCV, opened on July 6, 2019.
With some Cape Verdean songs in its repertoire at the presentation, the Camerata de Loures played some Cape Verdean songs, such as mornas and coladeiras, by the orchestra directed by conductor António Barbosa.
According to information shared by the CCCV, the Orquestra Geração is made up of young people from all social strata, with a special focus on young people from families of the “lower social strata”, many of them from Cape Verdean origin families.
According to the same source, Orquestra Geração/Sistema Portugal is a socio-pedagogical project inspired by the well-known “El Sistema”, from Venezuela, and its main objective is to “promote the full development of children and young people, contributing to their personal, social and school, favoring social inclusion in more disadvantaged environments and with fewer opportunities, through the teaching of music”.
Based on partnerships, both institutional and patronage, and with the pedagogical support of the School of Music of the National Conservatory, the project has developed numerous educational and cultural proposals, with concrete results.
“There are many students who today changed attitudes and enriched their life projects, as well as those who opted for a future linked to music, gaining access to well-known professional music schools and higher education”, explained the CCCV coordinator, Angela Barbosa.
The project received, among other distinctions, the National Teachers Award in 2010, the Board of Excellence of the Municipality of Amadora in 2011, was considered one of the 50 best social projects of the European Union in 2013 and 2014, Honorable Mention by the Mota Engil Foundation in 2017 and already in 2018 it was considered project of the year by AGEAS.
In December 2018, Orquestra Geração was awarded the Gold Medal Commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, awarded by the Assembly of the Republic of Portugal, for the work carried out with children, young people and communities with whom they work.
In 2019, she was awarded the Medal of Merit of the Municipality of Amadora, awarded on the occasion of the commemorations of the 40th anniversary of the foundation of the municipality.
Orquestra Geração has been invited to several events, such as the launch session of the 20/20 European funds program, official commemorations of the 30th anniversary of Portugal’s entry into the European Community and in 2022 it was invited to participate in the solemn opening ceremony of the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April.
