Local Government'2024: Parties “indifferent” regarding the date of the elections as long as the Electoral Code is respected

Africa-Press – Cape verde. Political parties with parliamentary seats noted today that they do not have any preference regarding the setting of the date for the 2024 local elections, as long as the provisions of the Electoral Code are respected.

When speaking about the matter, in statements to Inforpress, the leader of the African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde (PAICV, opposition), Rui Semedo, recalled that this responsibility lies with the Government, the Prime Minister, Ulisses Correia e Silva. .

He pointed out, however, that the PAICV does not have any preference regarding the indication of the date for holding the 2024 local elections, as long as it is within the period that the law provides, that is, between October and December of this year.

“Within the period that the law provides, between October and December, whatever the scheduled date we are available to accept. The Government is the one who should set the date, we hope that it will consult the parties and reach consensus (…), but within the legal range, for us there is no problem”, he reiterated.

Asked to comment on the composition of the list of PAICV candidates for these elections, the leader of the largest opposition party assured that it is complete and should be announced in the coming days, more precisely on the 26th.

Also for the leader of the Independent and Democratic Cape Verdean Union (UCID, opposition), João Santos Luís, the choice of date is “indifferent” for his party, as long as, in this matter, the provisions of the Electoral Code are respected.

The leader of the Christian Democratic party explained that the Electoral Code stipulates that the next elections must take place 30 days before or 30 days after the date on which the last mayor of the municipal council took office.

“If we look, we can conclude that the last inauguration took place in November 2020, which means that the next elections should be scheduled by the Government between October and December 2024”, he clarified, reiterating that the UCID “has no preference” regarding the date for the holding of local elections in the country, as long as it respects the parameters defined in the current Electoral Code.

Inforpress also tried to hear the opinion of those responsible for the Movement for Democracy (MpD, power), but without success.

All that remains is to wait for the Government’s decision, after hearing the opinion of the parties, but even so, in this aspect it is not binding, and it is up to the Prime Minister to set the day he sees fit as long as it is in accordance with the law.

The National Elections Commission (CNE) suggests the date for the municipal elections to be held in November, based on the limits set out in the Electoral Code, that is, 30 days before or 30 days after the expiration of the last mandate, bearing in mind, however, that the maximum legal limit for the elections is December this year.
