Africa-Press – Cape verde. Lourenço Lopes, the Deputy Secretary of State to the Prime Minister, stated today that the conditions are in place to ensure broad, high-quality, and impartial coverage of the legislative elections scheduled for May 17.
This statement was made during a press conference held to address the current situation of the public and private media sectors and to provide an overview of media coverage regarding the May 17 legislative elections.
“We can affirm that the conditions are guaranteed for qualified, extensive, and impartial coverage of the elections by public media outlets—RTC and Inforpress—across all electoral districts, from Santo Antão to Brava,” the Secretary of State declared.
According to Lourenço Lopes, conditions are equally guaranteed in terms of personnel, logistics, and funding, thereby enabling media organizations and public outlets to contribute significantly to the strengthening of democracy and to ensure effective coverage.
The Secretary of State emphasized that “effective coverage” entails affording equal treatment to all political parties and candidates, underscoring that public media outlets and professionals in the field owe no allegiance to specific parties, but solely to the truth.
“Media outlets have but one commitment; they hold no allegiance to any political party—their sole commitment is to the truth,” he added.
Lourenço Lopes further highlighted the importance of ensuring that all citizens feel represented, noting that the various parties and candidates reflect the inherent diversity of Cape Verdean society.
The same source drew attention to the state of press freedom in the country, which ranks among the best in the Portuguese-speaking African world and places within the top 30 globally.
Regarding the approaching World Press Freedom Day—observed annually on May 3, a date that this year coincides with the election campaign period—the Deputy Secretary of State informed that circumstances would likely preclude a dedicated discussion on the media sector at that specific time; it was for this very reason that the present press conference was convened. He believes that, during a quieter period—free from the typical noise of an election campaign—it will be possible to discuss the matter.
