Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Maio Biodiversity Foundation (FMB) recorded more than 13,000 sea turtle nests during the 2025 season of its community-based conservation campaign.

Preliminary data, released this Saturday during the campaign’s closing ceremony, also indicate 87 cases of collection, 34 dead turtles, and 55 rescues.

According to program coordinator Herval Silva, despite the number of recorded cases of collection, the overall result is considered positive, highlighting the increase in the number of nests and the growing involvement of local communities in sea turtle protection.

“We have seen a continuous increase in nests each season, which is very gratifying. We have been able to involve several people from the communities in conservation efforts, which also generates a decent source of income for many families,” he emphasized.

Conservation work on Maio Island is community-based and, this year, directly involved approximately 100 people, including monitors, volunteers, families integrated into the housing tourism program, and members of coastal communities.

The 2025 season had a budget of over R$9,000, but, according to Herval Silva, the foundation continues to face challenges in raising funds to ensure the continuity and strengthening of conservation efforts.

Recognized as a strategic point for the preservation of the species, Maio Island stands out for its strong community involvement and records of new nesting species, ranking among the five largest loggerhead turtle nesting colonies in the world and the third largest nationally.
