Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Mayor of São Miguel, Herménio Fernandes, stated that today Calheta is a cosmopolitan, healthy, organized city and a reference in Cape Verde.

Herménio Fernandes gave a summary of the current situation in the city of this municipality in Santiago, which today celebrated the day of its patron saint, Our Lady of Socorro.

“Today, the city of Calheta is a reference because it is clean and healthy, which has gone from two events eight years ago to eight annual cultural events, and which creates a market for artists, cultural promoters and values ​​creative industries (…)”, said the mayor in statements to the press.

All of this, as he argued, is due to the “strong investment” in the territory, which today has better accessibility, modern roads, requalified neighborhoods, with humanized and inclusive public spaces, with improved access to water, improved public lighting and access to energy, and with improved urban planning and development.

And also with the creation of industrial zones and zones for investment in tourism and other areas.

During the interview, he reaffirmed that Calheta in 2024 “has nothing to do” with that of 2015 and that the transformations registered in recent years “are undeniable”, and these gains are “a source of pride” for all residents of São Miguel and in the diaspora.

On the occasion, he said he had no doubt that the signs of confidence registered have attracted investment in the municipality, especially from emigrants from São Miguel in various economic areas.

In addition to the festival, held for the second consecutive time on Calhetona beach, on the 9th and 10th, to mark the City Festival and its patron saint, a series of social, cultural, sporting, gastronomic and political activities were held in São Miguel, which have already started since mid-July, as well as inaugurations.

The festivities will reach their high point this Thursday, with a procession and mass in honor of the patron saint.
