The study on the “Impacts of covid-19 on the mental health of the Cape Verdean population”, presented this Monday by the National Institute of Public Health, confirmed the suspicions of aggravation of the disease situation, due to the increase in cases of depression. Women were the most affected.

The data were presented by the president of the National Institute of Public Health (INSP), Maria da Luz Lima, on the sidelines of a workshop on mental health, to mark World Mental Health Day.

“We had situations of patients who reported that the disease situation worsened, the number of depression increased, people who reinforced their medication and there were people who were not taking medication and started to receive it, both because of anxiety and because of anxiety. depression,” he pointed out.

Among other results, the study revealed that women were the most sensitive in terms of mental health problems.

Post-traumatic stress and physical fatigue were also referenced.

“Women were twice as likely to have some issue related to mental health compared to men”, he highlighted, noting that, with regard to the impacts on the family, “fortunately the vast majority reported that they had and gave some social support. to the family members who were affected”.

Due to the scope of the study, Maria da Luz Lima indicated that these are the preliminary results, presented in a summarized way, so, as she said, a more in-depth report will be released later.

The research, nationwide, addressed factors such as depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, how to deal with the pandemic, the main fears that people had.

The data were collected in 2021, by a multidisciplinary team, composed of researchers from the INSP, the National Directorate of Health, the University of Cape Verde, the Jean Piaget University and with the technical support of the National Institute of Statistics, the WHO and of the West African Health Organization.
