Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Presidency of the Republic promotes, on June 7th and 8th, in São Vicente, a colloquium on “The Oceans”, under the motto “Protect the Oceans, Preserve Life”.
With the initiative, Palácio do Platô is associated with the “Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development – 2021 to 2030”, declared by the United Nations.
The objective is to place the Ocean on the global agenda and promote a common framework that guarantees the execution of concerted actions, in line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The Mindelo Colloquium, according to the Presidency of the Republic, will comprise a cycle of four thematic conferences, framed in the 10 challenges of the Ocean Decade.
It also includes exhibitions on best practices in the preservation of marine and coastal biodiversity, workshops on techniques for the reuse of marine litter and a film session related to the oceans.
The opening of the event takes place at 9:00 am, at the University of Mindelo, in an act to be presided over by the head of state, José Maria Neves. The first day will be closed by the Minister of the Sea, Abraão Vicente, at 16:00, at the University of Cape Verde.
The second day will be filled with a “major national campaign” to clean up the Seafront, focusing on sea beaches, coordinated throughout the country by the Red Cross of Cape Verde and the UNICV, in São Vicente.

The Decade of the Oceans, which takes place under the global motto “The science we need for the ocean we want”, aims to “raise awareness among public, private, international organizations and civil society about this important natural resource, mobilizing and bringing together all efforts for their health and sustainability”, as emphasized by the presidency of the Republic.
“By associating himself with the initiative, the Head of State thus endorses the challenges underlying the actions of the Decade of the Oceans, as the way to put the issue on the agenda of the country, made up 99% by sea, in order to raise awareness of society civil society and other actors, particularly about the opportunities and challenges of our ocean”, he explains.
