Africa-Press – Cape verde. Cape Verde will be represented at the 10th session of the Meeting of States Parties to the 2001 Convention concerning the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage, through the Minister of Culture and Creative Industries, Augusto Veiga.

On this occasion, the minister participates in the conference “Capacity Building for the Protection and Enhancement of African Underwater Cultural Heritage”, which takes place this Tuesday, June 17, at UNESCO headquarters in Paris, France.

During the event, Cape Verde will present the experience of the 1st Chantier École in underwater archaeology, held in Cidade Velha, a historic site classified as a World Heritage Site, in June 2024.

This initiative has the participation of professionals and researchers from eight African countries: Kenya, Morocco, Eritrea, Mozambique, Senegal, Gambia, Comoros and also Portugal.

According to a note from the Government’s office, Cape Verde, as a State Party to the Convention for the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage, has reaffirmed its commitment to the values ​​and principles of this treaty, seeking synergies to implement a heritage appreciation policy aligned with the country’s sustainable development strategies.

“The country’s adherence to this international heritage protection instrument, aligned with the governance vision, has created unique opportunities for sharing knowledge, integrating into international protection networks and strengthening technical and institutional capacities, in favor of defending a collective heritage of inestimable and irreplaceable value”, the note highlights.

The governor will be accompanied by the president of the Cultural Heritage Institute, Ana Samira Silva Baessa, and the technician and specialist José Évora.

Still in France, the Minister of Culture has scheduled a visit to the exhibition “La mer nous parle”, on display at the Nice Archaeology Museum and which is part of Cape Verde’s archaeological collection.

The agenda also includes meetings with the Mayor of Nice, the Secretariat of the Underwater Heritage Convention, Krista Pikkat, and the Assistant Director-General for Culture at UNESCO, Ernesto Ottone.
