Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Minister of Health warned this Thursday that Cape Verdeans should pay attention to the health authorities’ guidelines on chronic kidney failure, having called for the adoption of healthy behaviors and habits to prevent the disease.

Filomena Gonçalves was speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the opening ceremony of the tenth anniversary of the National Institute of Public Health (INSP) held at the National Assembly under the motto “Ten years of commitment to health”.

On World Kidney Day, which is celebrated today, the minister emphasized that kidney diseases represent a “huge cost”, both monetary and social, because, she stressed, patients on other islands must be transferred to the two hospitals that treat kidney disease. disease, namely the Agostinho Neto University Hospital, in the city of Praia, and the Baptista de Sousa Hospital, in São Vicente.

“We have been following the current debate that has to do with the law that is in the parliamentary house, which is the law that will allow the transplantation of human organs, especially kidneys. If we adopt healthy lifestyle practices and respect the guidelines, we will be preventing more kidney transplants,” warned the minister, who added that there are currently 247 patients undergoing dialysis treatment.

Excessive use of alcohol, sedentary lifestyle, excessive salt consumption and ingestion of little water are some of the factors that contribute to the onset of the disease, said the minister, calling on Cape Verdeans to embrace the authorities’ guidelines and adopt healthy habits to guarantee quality of life.

Worldwide, it is estimated that more than 850 million people live with chronic kidney disease, which caused more than 3.1 million deaths in 2019.

It is currently the eighth leading cause of death and forecasts point to a worsening of years of life lost by 2040.
