Minister warns of urgency to speed up investigation on the corn armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda) pest

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Minister of Agriculture and Environment considered it essential to accelerate the steps in research and development to end the corn armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda) pest, because the challenges persist at regional and national level.

Gilberto Silva expressed this concern at the opening of the regional workshop on the sustainable management of corn armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda), which runs from 13 to 17 this month in the City of Praia, in an initiative of CORAF, an international association dedicated to increasing prosperity, food and nutritional security in West and Central Africa.

He pointed out that “in most African countries, farmers are still helpless in the damage caused by this pest”, which is why he drew attention to the need to continue to invest in the capacity to intervene, through the specialisation and mobilisation of human and financial resources, as well as the appropriate logistics for an integrated struggle, persistent and lasting.

The sharing of technical and scientific knowledge and technologies between countries was pointed out by the Minister as being essential, claiming that this pest, originating from the American continent, spread very quickly over the African continent, reflecting the decrease in agricultural production.
