Ministry of Education announces processing of outstanding salaries

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The National Director of Education said today that outstanding salaries owed to 250 new teachers, for December and January, are being processed to be paid “as quickly as possible”.

“It is in order to pay these salaries immediately, while the process takes place in the Public Administration” that “the salaries are already being processed”, Adriano Moreno told journalists.

The objective is that “this teacher situation is resolved as quickly as possible”, he added.

The National Director of Education commented on the delay at a press conference dedicated to the protests held on Monday, in which teachers demonstrated on several islands, demanding salary adjustments and showing solidarity with colleagues who have not been paid since November.

“The Ministry is not indifferent” to teachers’ complaints, he said.

Around 250 Cape Verdean teachers who entered service this year received only the first three months (September, October and November), with the Ministry of Education justifying itself with the need for the contracts to be approved by the Court of Auditors, which , in turn, told Lusa that he had not received any requests.

The majority of affected teachers are located on islands far from their areas of residence and have difficulty paying for food, medical treatments, among others, according to reports made to Lusa.
