Africa-Press – Cape verde. The MpD Parliamentary Group revealed this Friday that it rejected the resolution to celebrate the Centenary of Amílcar Cabral because “PAICV intends to take more political advantage than to pay a sincere and objective tribute to the figure”.
MpD considers that PAICV intends to take more political advantage than celebrating Cabral’s Centenary
The leader of the Parliamentary Group of the Movement for Democracy (MpD), Paulo Veiga, said that he disagrees with the voices that have been raised in recent days against the deputies who maintain power, claiming that they voted in conscience and in accordance with the policies and ideologies of the party, placing national interests above any political disputes.
Flanked by parliamentarians Euclides Silva and Celso Ribeiro, Paulo Veiga criticized the way in which the PAICV (opposition) “is proposing to celebrate the centenary of Amílcar Cabral, through a resolution that, he stressed, has no external effectiveness”
He stressed that in democracy consensus is built on differences and that one must know how to respect and live with different ideas, stating that it was the MpD Government that granted Cape Verdean nationality to Amílcar Cabral, as a national hero, in July 2000.
“PAICV is trying to play with the intelligence and memory of Cape Verdeans and as we have an empty, hollow and contentless opposition, it tries to create yet another political fact, but Cape Verdeans are paying attention. Reaching such a conclusion, that we MpD deputies are against the figure of Amílcar Cabral because we do not associate it with a parody that is being invented by those who never knew how to value Cabral”, he highlighted.
Regarding the criticisms of the President of the Republic, José Maria Neves, regarding the way in which the resolution was rejected, the leader of the MpD parliamentarians said he understood that they were addressed to the PAICV, as the proponent of the resolution, when the head of state argues that “this is not should be discussed if there was no consensus.”
“If we didn’t want to play this political game that is happening now, it wouldn’t be carried out. The PAICV knew that there were divergent opinions on the content and the way they wanted to present this document”, he clarified, considering, on the other hand, aligning himself with the lament of the president of the National Assembly, Austelino Correia, claiming that “he acted well”.
Proclaiming the MpD as the party of freedom and democracy, Veiga said he could not accept the appropriation of the figure of Amílcar Cabral, to be a figure of veneration, campaign and political intoxication, highlighting that scholars of Amílcar Cabral usually remember that Cabral himself did not He was very fond of recognizing these political practices.
“Amílcar Cabral was a party leader, bearer and follower of a certain political ideology. In fact, he did not become a figure of the State of Cape Verde, due to his murder, although we recognize the effects and reasons for his struggle. What the PAICV wanted, with this centenary, is to force the Republic to mission a figure who was also a partisan,” he explained.
State institutions belong to the Republic, he explained, adding that “the use of State institutions for a kind of political veneration and intoxication is at least controversial, especially on the eve of all national elections.
“We are no longer in the party/state era! There are ways in the laws of the Republic to honor prominent public figures, such as Amílcar Cabral. And we are in favor, yes, in accordance with the Republic’s laws, paying all legal tributes to Amílcar Cabral”, he noted.
The MpD parliamentary group, considered, acted in coherence with the principles of the Democratic Rule of Law that it has defended since its creation, guided by democratic legality, giving full compliance to the “mother law”, an instrument that guarantees our freedoms.
