MpD fails resolution to celebrate Cabral’s centenary: PAICV criticizes it as a sad moment in the history of parliament
In his declaration of vote, the president of PAICV stated that his party moved forward with the initiative, taking into account the figure of Amílcar Cabral as leader of the PACG who led the struggle for liberation in Guinea and Cape Verde and for being a distinct personality, whose His work is recognized and studied in several countries around the world.

Inside, he regretted the MpD’s vote against celebrating the anniversary with the support of the State, describing it as «a sad moment in the history of the Cape Verdean parliament». He predicted that “ the MpD will be penalized ” for this by the people it represents.

The leader of the MpD bench argued that his party has nothing against Amílcar Cabral and that he voted against it because he considered the figure in the resolution to be legally wrong, admitting that if it were a bill that enshrined Cabral as a figure of the State, the MpD would vote in favor . Among other arguments, Paulo Veiga highlights PAICV’s attempt to use Amílcar Cabral as leader and ideological mentor of PAIGC / CV, when he should have been a figure outside the parties.

The UCID, in the voice of its president, said, in turn, that it voted in favor of the proposed resolution presented by the PAICV bench, considering Amílcar Cabral, who led the fight for the independence of Guinea and Cape Verde, an unavoidable figure in history of our country. João Luís concluded that the aforementioned proposal with the MpD’s vote against was due to attempts by PAICV and MpD to appropriate the dates of July 5th / January 20th and January 13th, respectively. He argued that such dates belong to the Nation and are independent of these parties.

Everything indicates that this positioning by the MpD will cause a lot of ink in the country and among the Cape Verdean community abroad.
