Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Parliamentary Group (GP) of the Movement for Democracy (MpD, power) defended this Tuesday, 9th, in the city of Praia, a systemic and realistic approach to security in the country.
The GP-MpD defends this position because it understands that the National Police has developed “preventive actions and proximity policing”.
The statement was made, at a press conference, by the MpD deputy for the Ilha Brava Electoral Constituency, Samuel Varela, when taking stock of the parliamentary days as part of the preparation for the first parliamentary session in January, which has as one of the highlights the debate with the Minister of Internal Administration, proposed by the GP-MPD.
The proposed law that makes the first amendment to Law No. 33/X/2023 of 22 August that defines the conditions for attribution, acquisition, loss and reacquisition of Cape Verdean nationality (General and Specialty Discussions) is also on the agenda .
According to Samuel Varela, in this context “the logic of co-responsibility requires commitments from different social actors, changes in attitudes and behaviors, primarily with families, schools, communities, religious institutions, ministries that interact with security issues” , he said.
For the deputy for the Electoral Circle of Brava, if there are issues that require a “broad consensus” in an archipelagic country like Cape Verde, it is “security”, considering that “it is always serious when we can put the foundations of security, democracy and of the Democratic Rule of Law”.
In his opinion, crime has decreased significantly in large cities. “In recent days, some specific cases have appeared, but this Government is very committed to national security”, said Samuel Varela.
“The State Budget for 2024 in Internal Administration reiterates the firm commitment to the dignification and appreciation of professionals and the commitment to investments in national security. It established as a priority for the sector the approval and implementation of the Staff Statute of the National Civil Protection and Fire Service and the implementation of the Remuneration Statute of the National Police”.
This first parliamentary session of this month, which starts on Wednesday, 10th, at the National Assembly, in the City of Praia, also has on the agenda the setting of the minutes of the first Plenary Session of April 2022, the minutes of the second Plenary Session of April 2022 and the minutes of the Solemn Session welcoming the President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Frank Walter Steinmer.
