Africa-Press – Cape verde. Members of Parliament from the Movement for Democracy (MpD, the ruling party), elected for Santo Antão, announced on Friday, the 5th, that they are in dialogue with the Government to develop a plan to assist communities in the face of a poor agricultural year.

At the end of a three-day visit to Santo Antão, the MPs noted that the agricultural year “will be nil in terms of grain production,” although they believe that the recent rains on the island may guarantee some pasture.

“We are already in dialogue with the Government to develop a plan to assist communities with the creation of jobs so that people can have income,” stressed the parliamentarians’ spokesperson, Damião Medina.

Damião Medina stated that there is a need to create job opportunities in the areas most affected by the poor agricultural year, such as Lagoa da Ribeira das Patas and the northern and eastern plateaus.

This parliamentarian also referred to public lighting and acknowledged the need for improvement on the island, but said he had received assurances from the Government that Santo Antão would receive six thousand new light bulbs as part of the “Cape Verde 100% LED” project.

This project will allow for the replacement of all existing light bulbs and reinforcement in areas where needed, he explained.

During the visit, the MpD deputies visited completed and ongoing projects in Santo Antão, including the young farmers’ project in Casa de Meio, the Gamboeza hydro-agricultural project, the waste disposal center, and the Porto Novo vocational training center.

The deputy informed that the island of Santo Antão is currently receiving public investments of around three million escudos.
