Africa-Press – Cape verde. National representatives elected by the MpD (MpD) today praised the response to the reconstruction of São Vicente after Storm Erin. This position was expressed in statements to the press at Aldeamento Rozar, during the review of the Decentralized Conferences of the MpD Parliamentary Group on the island, by the leader of the parliamentary group.
Celso Ribeiro emphasized that this is not the time to reap political rewards and called for a concentrated collective effort to rebuild São Vicente.
“We made a point of coming here, seeing the situation on the ground, and the reality is extremely positive, demonstrating that local authorities, central authorities, and the people of São Vicente have rolled up their sleeves. Today, the island is practically functioning and recovering. This is the time for the people of São Vicente, not for political disputes. We are all too few for this battle, which is embraced by Cape Verdeans in the country and in the diaspora,” he emphasized.
During the visit, the representatives met with families, businesses, and institutions, highlighting the authorities’ swift action in restoring the island.
Celso Ribeiro added that, with the start of the parliamentary year, the priority remains the population of São Vicente and the island’s reconstruction.
“We will debate the State Budget and, based on the facts we have observed, we will propose measures to ensure positive discrimination for the island. The outcome of this visit is extremely positive. We inspected infrastructure and buildings and saw emblematic examples of the work being done. People in the most affected areas are already housed, which provides us with all the elements for a serious, objective, and people-focused debate,” he explained.
The parliamentary leader highlighted the support announced by the Government, which has already begun to be implemented, namely the resettlement of families who lost their homes and support for micro-businesses.
According to Celso Ribeiro, the party will propose measures in the next State Budget debate, advocating for “positive discrimination” for São Vicente, guaranteeing additional resources and long-term solutions for the island’s recovery, “especially in the infrastructure sector and housing for the most affected populations.”
