Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Movement for Democracy (MpD) states that the independence of Cape Verde is a historic milestone for all the people and not just for those who call themselves the “best sons of this land”.
Statements made today, at a press conference, by Vander Gomes, deputy secretary of the party, in response to criticism of the program to commemorate 50 years of independence, which began on Friday in São Vicente.
“[Independence] belongs to all the people and not just to a few who called themselves and call themselves the ‘best sons of this land’, who want the people, the Government and the State to owe them some kind of allegiance and attack anyone who thinks, acts and speaks differently. They did not understand that, after 5 July 1975, 13 January 1991 also happened, that the regime they imposed then no longer reigns, that we no longer need ‘strength, light and guidance’ from any party to be proud of our Nation”, he states.
The MpD congratulates the State for organising the 50th anniversary celebrations of independence and emphasises the return of the events to popular participation.
“We acknowledge the contribution of all those who fought for our independence, for the sacrifices made and the results achieved. But history moves on and Cape Verde has not stood still. Today, the protagonists are chosen by the people and only they pay tribute to them. In a democracy, there is no historical legitimacy. We congratulate the State of Cape Verde for the way it organised, structured and is implementing the 50th anniversary festivities, returning the celebrations to the people, who are, after all, the true protagonists, the owners of the independent and democratic nation”, he stresses.
The official celebrations of the fiftieth anniversary of national independence officially began on 25 April. The programme will run for more than eight months, with activities throughout the country and in the diaspora, under the motto “Cape Verde, Our Pride, Our Future”, under the auspices of the National Organising Committee for the Celebrations, which, among other personalities, includes all political forces with seats in parliament.
This morning, also at a press conference, the PAICV in São Vicente criticized the choice of April 25 as the date for the official opening of the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of Cape Verde’s independence and considered “scandalous” the lack of reference to the national liberation struggle and Amílcar Cabral in the speeches of the Prime Minister and the Mayor of São Vicente.
