Africa-Press – Cape verde. The president of the PAICV’s Regional Political Commission (CPR) in Santiago Norte, Carla Carvalho, said today that the party has a “clear ambition” to win all six municipal chambers in the region in this year’s local elections.
“We maintain the goal of winning all municipal councils in the region in this year’s local elections and we are working to win them”, said Carla Carvalho, speaking to journalists, in Assomada, Santa Catarina, on the sidelines of the party’s Regional Assembly in Santiago Norte, under the motto “PAICV united and strong to beat Santiago Norte”.
For her, this objective is possible taking into account that the evaluation of the municipal councils managed by the MpD in the Santiago Norte region, namely São Miguel, São Salvador do Mundo, São Lourenço dos Órgãos and Santa Catarina is negative, adding that this evaluation is not only PAICV, but also the entire civil society.
In this sense, he assured that the PAICV will maintain its focus on the two current mayors José dos Reis (Tarrafal), and Carlos Silva (Santa Cruz) and that it already has a closed list of the other names of those at the top of the list for municipal bodies, namely Santa Catarina, São Lourenço dos Órgãos, São Miguel and São Salvador do Mundo, have all the conditions to be the largest local party, whether in Santiago Norte or at national level.
Without confirming names circulated for the other municipalities such as Armindo Freitas (Santa Catarina), João Alberto (São Salvador do Mundo), Euclides Cabral (São Lourenço dos Órgãos) and Sílvio Tavares (São Miguel), Carla Carvalho limited herself to stating that these names have all the conditions to help the party be a credible alternative in the Santiago Norte region.
At the time, the politician said she believed that just as PAICV won in Tarrafal, after 28 years, it could repeat the same feat in São Miguel, after 27 years of governance by the Movement for Democracy (MpD), in the 2024 municipal elections.
In São Miguel, the national deputy recalled that the current head of the executive, Herménio Fernandes, is “running a government of reprisals and is using state power to abuse citizens”.
“We believe that, with the work we have done and the results obtained so far, we will be the largest local party, both in the region, winning all the chambers and at a national level”, insisted the PAICV regional leader.
The regional assembly, which served to discuss the 2024 local councils and approve the management instruments for the year 2024, was attended by party activists and leaders at sectoral, regional and national levels, and was chaired by the party president, Rui Semedo.
Rui Semedo confirmed to the press that the party will bet on all current mayors, either two in Santiago Norte, three in Santiago Sul, two in Fogo, and in Boa Vista.
“Our mayors are presidents with good performances in Santiago Norte, and in general in the country (…)”, he stated, justifying the party he leads’ bet on them for this year’s local elections.
“It is not just the activists, but the population that has been appealing for us to give them the opportunity to continue the development process in their respective municipalities, which have already begun to assert themselves, they already have a clear voice that defends and leads the municipalities, they are improving the people’s living conditions and contribute to improving the quality of cities (…)”, he reinforced.
Regarding the party’s candidates in the other municipalities, he reiterated that they will be presented to the country at the end of March.
“We are betting on candidates who already have recognition in their municipalities and whose name is considered and discussed at the level of party structures, and also listening to the pulse of the municipality itself. We give guarantees that we are in a position to do a good job and present good names that will top the party list in the 2024 local elections”, explained Semedo.
Finally, he reiterated that PAICV’s objective is to be the “largest local party” in Cape Verde for the first time, ensuring that such a goal is possible to achieve and that they are working both in terms of lists and local electoral program to be successful. by elected officials from all municipalities as the best proposal in terms of candidacy and electoral program and platform.
