Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Youth for Democracy (JpD) in Portugal elected Naomi dos Santos Nortey as its new leader during its general assembly held on Sunday, the 7th, in Amadora, the organization announced.

In her closing speech, the now-leader of JpD-Portugal expressed her deep gratitude for the trust placed in her, committing to work tirelessly to strengthen the presence, voice, and influence of JpD-Portugal.

Naomi Santos Nortey assured that the new team will be aligned with the major challenges faced by the MpD, actively contributing to the mobilization of the diaspora and to building the necessary conditions for victory in the 2026 legislative elections.

The session was chaired by the Secretary-General of the Movement for Democracy (MpD), Agostinho Lopes, who highlighted the strategic relevance of JpD-Portugal in strengthening the MpD’s political presence in the diaspora and deepening ties between the Cape Verdean community residing abroad and Cape Verde.

In his speech, he reinforced that organized youth is an essential pillar for democratic vitality and for winning the major political battles that the country faces.

The leader of JpD, Liver Gomes, who spoke at the same session, highlighted the historical contribution of JpD-Portugal to the strengthening of Cape Verdean democracy, emphasizing the quality of the personnel trained within this structure over the years, personnel who today serve Cape Verde with competence, vision, and a sense of mission.

Finally, he congratulated the newly elected president and challenged her to further enhance the civic and political intervention capacity of JpD-Portugal, reinforcing its internal cohesion and its commitment to national causes.
