Africa-Press – Cape verde. Today, Monday, 18th, the Minister of Justice presides over the official opening of the 22nd edition of National Prisoners’ Week at the Praia Central Prison. The activities cover all prison establishments in the country, with the aim of promoting appreciation, resocialization and team spirit among inmates.
The idea is, according to a statement from the Government, to provide interactivity and entertainment, work on physical, mental and emotional health, with a focus on promoting self-esteem, leisure and relaxation.
It is also a way of encouraging the appreciation of freedom, stimulating the qualities and cultural interaction of participants in a situation of confinement, providing greater harmony in the prison environment and encouraging good discipline, valuing life and preventing suicide within the prison premises.
Prisoners’ Week takes place this year under the motto “It’s in your hands to do good”, the opportunities created in different areas through intervention projects, training and activities that promote the appreciation of their experiences, exchange of knowledge, creativity and reflections.
Prison population is increasing
Recently released data indicate that the prison population in Cape Verde, estimated at 2,086 inmates, increased by 33% as data from the first Prison Census of 2018 pointed to the existence of 1,567 inmates.
The most critical case is the Praia Central Prison, which houses more than double its capacity.
