Africa-Press – Cape verde. In total, 926 people in the last three years have reported falling seriously ill after visiting the archipelago
Hundreds of British tourists have come together and are taking legal action after contracting gastric illnesses while staying in Cape Verdean hotels, Metro.co.uk reports.
Since 2022, hundreds of tourists have reported falling ill with serious illnesses, such as Shigella (an acute intestinal infection caused by bacteria, with symptoms including fever, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea) and Salmonella, in seven different hotels in Cape Verde.
Jatinder Paul, an international lawyer at Irwin Mitchell, who is representing the tourists, told the British newspaper that: “the sheer volume of customers we continue to see arriving who have fallen ill during stays in Cape Verde over the last three years is incredibly concerning”. “The numbers involved show that these are not isolated incidents”, he continued.
In 2022, a total of 806 people came forward to take legal action, followed by 65 in 2023 and 55 this year. Metro.co.uk contacted Tui for comment, but received no response.
In 2023, Forbes published a ranking of the 25 holiday destinations where tourists were most at risk of falling ill (Holiday Sickness Index 2023) and, at that time, both Sal (in 3rd place) and Boa Vista (in 9th place) were mentioned as the places where travellers should be most careful. The list was topped by Punta Cana (Dominican Republic) and Sharm El-Sheikh (Egypt).
According to the same publication, Mexico (with 4 sites), Egypt (with two) and Spain (also with two), were the countries that, along with Cape Verde, had the most destinations considered to be at risk.
