Africa-Press – Cape verde. The deputy prime minister presented today, at a press conference, “significant measures” that will positively impact the lives of Cape Verdeans in 2024, with emphasis on the increase in the minimum wage and the expansion of social protection networks.

“The minimum wage in public administration will increase from 15 to 16 thousand escudos. The minimum wage in the private sector will increase from 14 to 15 thousand escudos”, said Olavo Correia, revealing plans for the future.
“We decided to create a working group, with all social partners, so that in the next budgets, we have the conditions to reach the threshold of 17 thousand escudos in terms of minimum wage in Cape Verde”, he declared.
Still in his statements, the also Minister of Finance and Business Development and Minister of the Digital Economy, emphasized the continuous growth of the minimum wage since 2015, which already represents an increase of more than 45%.
“But, for 2024, in the private sector 14 to 15 thousand and in the public sector from 15 to 16 thousand escudos. Very important”, added Olavo Correia.
Another measure announced was the extension of unemployment benefit for domestic workers who were not previously beneficiaries of this support. The values, according to him, will be known later after consultation with the National Institute of Social Security (INPS).
For now, Olavo Correia highlighted the importance of this decision, stating that it will provide social protection for those who work in domestic jobs and often face job insecurity.
In relation to social protection, the minister announced an increase in the number of social pension beneficiaries and an expansion of the non-contributory regime, increasing the value from 25,400 to around 26,000 escudos.
The government official also emphasized the elimination of restrictions that previously prevented many citizens from receiving the benefit, now guaranteeing broader access to the social pension.
Finally, the Deputy Prime Minister assured that the government is committed to guaranteeing automatic access to social pension benefits for all those who meet the legal requirements.
Cape Verde’s State Budget for 2024, with a value of 85,948,752,206 escudos, has as its main pillars the search for economic stability, the promotion of reforms and investments to create jobs and the commitment to protecting the most vulnerable, aiming to sustainable development and social cohesion in the country.
