Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Government will replace the entire fibrotic network that connects the islands, within the framework of the European Union’s “Global Gateway”, together with Cabo Verde Telecom, aiming to provide the country with a state-of-the-art network that improves connections.
This news was revealed today by the Minister of Digital Economy, Olavo Correia, during the presentation and discussion on the State Budget (OE) for the Economic Year 2024, highlighting that the fibrotic network that connects the islands has been going on for many years, which has demonstrated some limitations.
“We also need to improve internal connections and fundamental conditions. It is essential that, in addition to the EllaLink cable, which is already 100% (percent) operational for the market, we also have modern internal connections and, we will have financing at the Gateway level, to ensure that Cape Verde has a modern cable network state-of-the-art fibrotic submarine”, he explained.
Considering the Internet as an essential asset, the Minister of Finance and Deputy Prime Minister said that when the OE for 2024 is made, some of the beneficiaries will be able to be covered by a special social tariff, as important consumers of the technologies.
He also said that work is being done on the technological innovation ecosystem, especially in connection with universities and large companies in the technological area so that young people who leave Cape Verdean universities with talents in the most diverse areas and domains can enter the market with financing conditions to set up business.
“Digital is very important for the energy transition, for Tourism, for the blue, green, knowledge and financial economy and for other economic activities”, he said, highlighting that the executive’s goal is to reach 75% of digital public services by 2026 and above 80% by 2030.
The executive, assured on the other hand, will move forward with 5G, an ongoing project from the point of view of its concession, considered by the executive to be very important for the country’s notoriety in the areas of technology, in order to create the conditions to accelerate some areas that need greater speed, and are currently in the process of finalizing the concept to attack the market.
The minister explained that, in this sector, the State Budget for the economic year 2024 records an important growth from 570 thousand contos to 1,390,000 contos, coming from financing obtained to guarantee the completion of the largest project in the areas of technology, namely, the Technology Park and the Data Center, budgeted at more than 53 million euros.
On November 9, Parliament approved, in general terms, the proposed law that approves the State Budget for 2024, with 38 votes in favor from MpD deputies, 26 against from PAICV and three abstentions from UCID deputies.
