Africa-Press – Cape verde. South African filmmaker Oliver Hermanus will direct and executive produce a new limited Netflix series starring Jeremy Allen White.
The publication further reports that the project is currently in development at the streamer.
This will be a second adaptation of an Aciman novel following the critically acclaimed Call Me By Your Name, starring Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer.
According to Empire Magazine the book follows the life of Paul, a bisexual man, as he embarks on a journey of self-discovery. It delves into his romantic experiences with both men and women, spanning several decades.
White, best known for his award-winning role in the comedy series The Bear, will reportedly play the protagonist, Paul.
Per Deadline, the book’s official synopsis reads: “Enigma Variations charts the life of a man named Paul, whose loves remain as consuming and as covetous throughout his adulthood as they were in his adolescence. Whether the setting is southern Italy, where, as a boy, he has a crush on his parents’ cabinetmaker, or a snowbound campus in New England, where his enduring passion for a girl he’ll meet again and again over the years is punctuated by anonymous encounters with men – whether he’s on a tennis court in Central Park or on a New York sidewalk in early spring.
“Paul’s attachments are ungraspable, transient, and forever underwritten by raw desire. Ahead of every step Paul takes, his hopes, denials, fears, and regrets are always ready to lay their traps. Yet the dream of love lingers. We may not always know what we want. We may remain enigmas to ourselves and to others. But sooner or later, we discover who we’ve always known we were.”
This will be Hermanus’ second foray into television. He previously directed the period drama series Mary & George, which starred Julianne Moore.
His latest feature film, The History of Sound, starring Josh O’Connor and Bafta-winner Paul Mescal, is expected to debut at Cannes later this year, according to Awards Watch.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the story – based on the eponymous short story by American author Ben Shattuck – follows “two young men, Lionel (Mescal) and David (O’Connor), who, during the WWI period, set out to record the lives, voices and music of their countrymen. In this snatched, short-lived moment in their young lives, and while discovering the epic sweep of the USA, both men are deeply changed”.
