Opposition regrets silence on labor instability in Cape Verdean canning companies

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Independent and Democratic Cape Verdean Union (UCID) yesterday criticized the silence of deputies regarding labor instability in canning companies on the island of São Vicente, where Atunlo suspended activities, leaving 200 workers with half their salary.

António Monteiro, deputy of the UCID, spoke in the hemicycle today, to talk about ” many families ” who have difficulty feeding themselves, young people without jobs and “heads of families who lost their jobs at Atunlo and Frescomar. And no one said that.”

In a political statement on the second day of the March parliamentary session, the deputy from the UCID, the third political force in Parliament, opposed more optimistic analyzes by the Movement for Democracy (MpD), the party in power, questioning “the glasses that each person wears to see what has been done.”

The deputy of the African Independence Party of Cape Verde (PAICV, the largest opposition party), Fidel de Pina, said that the UCID portrayed a “chaotic” situation that covers the rest of the country, pointing to the case of teachers who started their duties this year teaching, in public schools, but which have been faced with late salaries and precariousness due to bureaucratic issues.

“ This Government has a human face ”, contested Celso Ribeiro, MpD deputy, in the response.

“ We increased the number of social pension beneficiaries, we increased the minimum wage, only those who use glasses to see ‘punctually’ are unable to recognize all these gains ”, he said.

The Spanish canning company Atunlo, on the island of São Vicente, suspended its activities for four months, since February 23, and 200 workers are at home, receiving half their salary.

The company did not comment on the situation, but Gilberto Lima, president of the General Industry, Food, Civil Construction and Services Union (SIACSA), said that the high costs on the island made the company unviable.

The Cape Verdean deputy prime minister, Olavo Correia, told Lusa that the Government is making efforts to ensure that the fish processing company remains in the country and grows.

The Frescomar cannery, with Spanish participation and also located on the island of São Vicente, has registered fluctuations in staff hiring, related to the supply of raw materials (part of which is through Atunlo).

The sector has Europe as its main destination market.
