PAICV accuses Government of failing to combat dengue fever

Africa-Press – Cape verde. PAICV believes that the Government has failed in the fight against dengue fever. This position was expressed today in Praia by the MP and member of the party’s municipal board, Paula Moeda, at a conference held at the party’s headquarters.

“The Government of Ulisses Correia e Silva and his Minister of Health have failed in every way in the late and timid fight against dengue fever. Without stocks of materials to combat the disease, diagnosis and adequate treatment, together with an epidemic that is ravaging the country, the situation is becoming even more precarious and worrying, and the working conditions in hospitals are terrible and chaos has set in,” she said.

Paula Moeda recalls that the first cases of dengue fever appeared in November 2023, but she believes that there was no preparation for fighting it and that the Government is now trying to make up for lost time.

“The fact is that there was no permanent and continued support work, with dengue fever occurring at the same time as some cases of malaria. Everything was very veiled, half-hidden and even hushed up for a long period of time. It dragged on for months and this shows that there is a gross failure in the integrated fight against disease-transmitting vectors. There was no adequate preparation for the first signs, the first cases, strong prevention, or a decisively active sector. The Government failed again and is now playing catch-up,” he stated.

The PAICV states that among the combat measures, the mobilization of anti-vector agents and the spraying of homes have been carried out with some constraints.

“Two measures, perhaps the most important in preventing and controlling the spread, but which have had many problems and constraints in their implementation. The anti-vector agents, dissatisfied with the lack of working conditions and precarious employment relationships, participated in strikes during the dengue epidemic, showing their dissatisfaction with delayed and poorly paid salaries. The health agents who carry out the spraying do not receive risk allowance, they lack spraying equipment, they often lacked it. There was also a lack of dengue tests,” he stressed.

According to data from the daily dengue bulletin issued on 3 October, the country currently has 9,475 reported cases, including 6,114 confirmed cases and 2 cumulative deaths. The city of Praia has the highest number of dengue cases.
