Africa-Press – Cape verde. PAICV today accused the Government of forcing newly hired teachers, even those selected through a public competition, to sign precarious contracts. The largest opposition party highlighted the job insecurity of teachers recruited at the beginning of the current academic year, pointing out that they are facing financial difficulties, are far from their families and have not yet received salaries.
At a press conference to address issues related to delays in the payment of salaries in some sectors of activity, deputy Manuel Brito declared that teachers recruited at the beginning of the current academic year are experiencing job insecurity and poverty.
“They were forced to illegally sign service contracts, as a condition for them to be able to receive their salaries before Christmas, three months after having signed a fixed-term employment contract, even though they had been recruited through a public competition”, he stressed.
Which did not happen according to the PAICV, since they received their first salaries two days before the end of the year, that is, after six months of work.
“In the month now ending, January, all teachers nationwide received their salaries, with the exception of these new teachers, a fact that has caused many embarrassments and very serious problems for them and their families”, he lamented.
He therefore warned that the Prime Minister and the Minister of Education need to know that teachers have bills to pay and families to support.
The deputy for the Santiago Sul constituency recalled that many of them were transferred to other islands and were still in the installation phase, which is why he called for the utmost urgency in resolving these issues that “have been dragging on for almost six months”.
For the party, teachers cannot continue to be “harmed by the illegality and successive administrative failures of the Ministry of Education, which appears to be “bewildered in an ungoverned country”.
Manuel Brito also accused the Government of having made a monthly discount to be sent to the INPS, which has not yet been sent, stating that teachers are embarrassed in pharmacies when they are informed that they are without Social Security coverage.
On the other hand, regarding the absences given as part of the teachers’ strike on the 22nd and 23rd of November, whose deductions were supposed to be made in December, he revealed that it was decided to make some in January, also pointing out cases in which they were doubled.
“The current situation leads us to state that we are facing a Ministry of Education that commits illegalities, practices ill-treatment and does not value the teaching profession. We have a minister who does not learn from administrative errors”, he denounced, which is why, he announced, the PAICV will call the minister to parliament to provide clarifications.
The party also called for special attention to the class, regarding mental health, in a year dedicated to this issue, stating that it is a necessity since these professionals deal with different situations daily that cause emotional exhaustion.
