Africa-Press – Cape verde. The African Independence Party of Cape Verde today demanded a “complete and convincing” position from the Government on the possible reception of illegal immigrants from the United Kingdom, stressing that this is a “human tragedy” which it is against.
The reaction was expressed to Inforpress by the party president, Rui Semedo, considering the statement released by the Government to be “laconic”, which should, in his opinion, be convinced that the country will not be used for this universal humanitarian drama.
For the largest opposition party, Cape Verde must position itself clearly, asserting that this “palliative” measure does not resolve the phenomenon of immigration, often caused by inequality, injustice, crises, instability, poverty and lack of measures and policy for the development.
“When people arrive on dry land, the action should be one of solidarity, protection, support. And we think that countries that have sufficient resources should contribute to international solidarity to help integrate people and families, find answers to a better life”, he argued, considering the attitude of expelling immigrants “immoral”.
The solution must be to focus on investment and the creation of living conditions to avoid the adventure and risk of leaving the country of origin, on the one hand, and on the other, rethinking the globalized world “which has no place” to welcome people with difficulties, said Rui Semedo.
As he highlighted, Cape Verde, in the name of dignity, “morality, solidarity” and the principles that govern respect for human rights and the appreciation of justice and inclusion, cannot collaborate with the British Government and receive the amount to welcome these immigrants .
In a statement, the Government clarified on Tuesday, the 16th, that negotiations to welcome illegal immigrants from the United Kingdom had never been approached with Cape Verde and that it would not accept entering into any business in this regard.
The British daily newspaper “The Times” reported that also on Tuesday, that Angola and Cape Verde will be on a list of countries that the British Government admits approaching to receive illegal immigrants from the United Kingdom, as it negotiated with Rwanda.
The information, unofficial, was confirmed by the “BBC”.
According to the daily, the British Government will also be exploring other bets such as Senegal, Tanzania, Togo and Sierra Leone.
The lack of local resources and structures, scarce diplomatic relations and potential opposition from public opinion are some obstacles identified. Guinea-Bissau was rejected due to political instability, while Morocco, Tunisia, Namibia and The Gambia explicitly rejected negotiations on this matter.
Recalling that the Rwandan authorities agreed to receive hundreds of asylum seekers over the next five years in exchange for around 400 million pounds.
