Santiago Norte: PAICV denounces “abandonment” of the agriculture sector in Tarrafal by the Government
“The PAICV, during its successive governments, created a set of infrastructures in the municipality [of Tarrafal] such as irrigation, boreholes and reservoirs and developed a micro-irrigation system to facilitate the process of reducing the cost of water and to create conditions so that farmers can truly produce”, began by saying the spokesperson for the CPR of the African Independence Party of Cape Verde (PAICV), Paulo Varela.

Also a member of the CPR of PAICV – Santiago Norte, who spoke at a press conference, near the agricultural perimeter of Colonato, where he was flanked by other party leaders at municipal and regional level, said that “agriculture in Tarrafal is going from abandonment to chaos, because there is no production”.

In other words, he added that as of 2016, there was a discontinuity in investments in the agriculture sector by the Government, which led to the loss of production capacity, reservoirs with water losses and no maintenance, boreholes deactivated, and farmers without training and with officials from the local Ministry of Agriculture and Environment who “do not serve”.

The same source warned that the farmers have not yet left the field, because they want to maintain possession of the land.

The Government, according to Paulo Varela, in the agricultural sector only brought Água de Rega (AdR) to companies, for whom it increased the burden on water management, which increased the price of this liquid from 25 escudos per ton to 40 escudos.

“So we ask what the current Government is giving to farmers in Tarrafal so that they can continue to produce”, asked the member of the CPR of PAICV in Santiago Norte, who asked for Government intervention in the fight against pests and the massification of drip irrigation. -the drop.

Finally, he advised the Government and the local MAA delegation to join the Tarrafalense city council to resolve the aforementioned farmers’ problems, and not to abandon the sector that they considered to be an important sector for food security and meeting the needs of families.
