The president of the African Independence Party of Cape Verde (PAICV, opposition) defended this Friday, during the opening of the political year in São Vicente, that Cape Verde urgently needs a deeply « patriotic government that governs to serve Cape Verdeans and not to favor the interests of groups ”. Rui Semedo also appealed to those present that his party “ must be able to provide leadership ” to the island, which is facing a difficult situation due to the political crisis in the Chamber led by Augusto Neves, from MpD.

According to Inforpress, Rui Semedo left the challenge on Friday night to a group of activists, supporters and friends of the party, who filled the concert hall at the Mindelo Cultural Center to mark the beginning of the political and parliamentary year 2023/ 2024 – deputies were on this island and in Santo Antão on decentralized parliamentary days.
Focusing on the 2024 municipal elections and 2025 legislative elections, the leader of the largest opposition party once again resumed his reflection on the MpD governance crisis, which is having, according to him, a serious impact on the lives of Cape Verdeans.
Rui Semedo highlighted the financial difficulties, for which, he argued, “ the Government is not creating cushions to cushion, but is only leaving the population to cope ”, he criticized, according to Inforpress, going through different “ crises ” experienced in the country, mainly in terms of transport, education, employment, security, health and others.
In light of all this, Semedo argued that Cape Verde urgently needs a deeply «patriotic government that governs to serve Cape Verdeans and not to favor the interests of groups», as is happening with the current «fat and intransparent MpD government » , headed by Ulisses Correia e Silva.
For a new leadership of São Vicente
But Semedo’s reflections didn’t stop there. According to him, at this moment it is good to evaluate what São Vicente gained with the local governance of the Movement for Democracy (MpD), since the PAICV never governed the island.
“ But this assessment is not worth doing alone, we have to do it with the people, with the voters of São Vicente ”, considered the party leader, admitting that there is a “great desire ” for the party to win, but, according to Inforpress, he assured, “ will alone is not enough ”.
For Rui Semedo, it is important to work on a daily basis and show the island that “ it is possible to be proud of its rulers and local power ”.
“ São Vicente needs and we have to be able to give São Vicente leadership for the island, because a mayor has to be a true leader, with more responsibilities than members of the Government”, he highlighted, adding that he must have “ a facilitating, mobilizing, and not exclusive vision ”.
Hence, he said, the challenge also remains for PAICV to convince voters that they are capable of mobilizing all their forces, skills, energies and desires for the development of the island.
“ The only thing that matters is São Vicente winning, if São Vicente wins, and that’s what we have to convince voters ”, he reiterated, according to Inforpress.
For his part, the president of the Regional Political Commission of São Vicente, Adilson Jesus, outlined the x-ray of the municipality in different quadrants, under the leadership of mayor Augusto Neves. and said that on a social level, this is “ one of the most fragile islands ”.
“ That’s why comrades, PAICV cannot sleep, it must not stop showing its face and showing that it can be an alternative ”, he urged, although admitting it would not be easy as the party had never governed the island and now has a “ very low ” score. ”.
Even so, Adilson Jesus, quoted by Inforpress, said he believes it is possible to present a candidacy to surprise São Vicente, with “ something youthful, new and different in the island and national panorama ”.
It should be remembered that, in addition to São Vicente, PAICV held, on October 7th, the opening act of the political year in the City of Praia.
