Africa-Press – Cape verde. This Saturday, the PAICV presented the lists of candidates for the Assembly and the Municipal Council of Praia, led by Clara Marques and Francisco Carvalho, who requested a second term in order to “consolidate local governance”. In the race to succeed himself in the capital’s local authority, Francisco Carvalho considered himself worthy of another term, as he believes that “despite all the obstacles, challenges, attacks and persecution in the first four years of his leadership, he managed to adapt the council’s performance to the reality of people’s lives”. In front of a “large audience” of friends, supporters and sympathisers of the African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde (PAICV) that filled the improvised tent in the square of the Amílcar Cabral Memorial, and in a speech systematically interrupted by applause from those present, Carvalho pointed to regaining the trust of the people as one of the great achievements of his term in office. He therefore requested votes for the “Praia para todos” candidate, so that he can obtain another order to consolidate the foundations, in order to make the dream of all Praia residents come true.
After listing a series of “works completed during his administration”, carried out using funding raised abroad, through cooperation with foreign institutions or funding from emigrants, as well as private companies in the country, the candidate, in the running for his own succession, promised to build projects in all the localities of the municipality.
“We have the capacity to dialogue, to build bridges and to seek funding to make the dream of the residents of Praia come true. We have already connected Praia with the world. Now we have to strengthen this work together, because we have already identified a set of opportunities and we are in a position to work so that Praia becomes the pride of all”, he stated.
In his list of actions for his second term, if it comes to fruition, he listed a policy aimed at combating the level of insecurity and juvenile delinquency, with the creation of three mobile Municipal Police units to provide greater security, access to video surveillance, and combating unemployment by creating jobs through a Municipal Employment Plan. He also promised to create a Private Hospital, as part of the twinning with the city of Dakar (Senegal) and Health Units in the towns of Safende, Alto Glória, São Francisco and São Pedro, to build Casa para Todos (House for All) of the CMP, an industrial park with capacity for 50 companies and to put Praia on the tourism map of Cape Verde. Clara Marques, who is also running for her own successor in the Municipal Assembly, said she was ready to continue “fighting for a fairer and more inclusive Praia” in her exercise of citizenship, aiming at the well-being of the citizens. The event was sponsored by the president of PAICV, Rui Semedo, who praised the importance of the continuity of the team of Francisco Carvalho and Clara Marques in the management of the municipality and had the involvement of the entire leadership of this, the largest opposition party.
