PAICV UCID Urge Focus on Social Economic Policies

Africa-Press – Cape verde. Combating poverty, diversifying the economy, investing in training and education, decent housing and health. These are some of the areas that, according to the two parliamentary opposition parties, should receive priority investment in the remainder of the tenth legislature.

Positions expressed on Monday night by the PAICV and the UCID, during the “Plenário”, the political debate programme on Rádio Morabeza.

On the side of the largest opposition party, Nilton Silva defends the definition of clear public policies for the most diverse sectors.

“They could, for example, implement policies with quick effects, such as truly social support, emergency assistance, incentives for young people, short-term incentives for strategic sectors such as education, health, tourism, the modernisation and digitalisation of the country, complete the works that are behind schedule, define clear public policies and launch, as quickly as possible, the social housing programme so that people have decent housing as promised by the MpD”, he points out.

Zilda Oliveira, from UCID, also calls for the implementation of better policies in several areas, including connectivity, due to its direct impact on the country’s economy.

“Diversification of the economy, investment in education and training, greater investment in health, improvement of connectivity, which ultimately impacts the economy, the issue of adequate housing, sustainability, which is a concern for environmental issues and natural resources, etc., and governance”, she says.

The new Statute of Municipalities, the automatic census and the legislative packages on justice are highlighted as advances in legislative production in parliament…

On the other hand, the lack of election, to date, of bodies external to parliament is, for UCID, a factor that compromises the idea of a Democratic Rule of Law. The MpD was absent from the debate.
