Africa-Press – Cape verde. The African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde (PAICV-opposition) today demanded “urgent measures” to solve the problem of irregular water management and distribution throughout the country, stating that Cape Verde wants to see results and not announcements.
“These announcements should have been made earlier. Now we need to quickly resolve the issue of the lack of water, which is what Cape Verdeans are waiting for”, said MP Carla Carvalho, considering that this is an electoralist government.
Carla Carvalho was speaking at a press conference in Praia, as part of the parliamentary proceedings in preparation for the plenary session that will take place from the 12th to the 14th of this month, with the debate with the Minister of State for Family, Inclusion and Social Development, Fernando Elísio Freire, as the highlight.
According to the opposition, the announcements made by the government are of investments that will take two to three years to be implemented and the problem of the lack of water should be a priority issue.
As the MP claimed, families and businesses will have to buy water at a very high price because they go weeks without water, causing losses to the family economy.
“We are facing an election-oriented government. Whenever we are on the eve of elections, there are announcements, there are first steps and there is a set of promises and commitments that are then not fulfilled, or are fulfilled very slowly”, she denounced.
The chairman of the board of directors of Águas de Santiago (AdS), Nilton Duarte, announced on Friday, the 7th, that the government is financing a program valued at 600 thousand contos to increase water production in the country’s capital.
He stressed that the executive has worked together with Electra, the producer entity, to improve water production capacity, and as for AdS, to increase distribution and work to reduce physical and commercial water losses in the city of Praia.
According to Nilton Duarte, the expectation is that the project will be completed within six to eight months, warning that the distribution part “being the most complex” will take longer to complete.
