Africa-Press – Cape verde. Cape Verde’s parliament unanimously approved this Wednesday the first amendment to the new nationality law, whose proposal had been removed from the agenda in the previous session.
The document presented by the Government was generally approved unanimously by the 63 deputies present in the session room – Cape Verde’s parliament is made up of 72 deputies.
34 deputies from the MpD, 25 from the PAICV and four from the UCID voted in favor of the amendment.
As announced by the president of the National Assembly, Austelino Correia, the proposal will now “download” to the specialized committee for the “necessary adjustments”, and then return to the plenary, for approval in the specialty.
In the first parliamentary session in January, the PAICV bench asked for the diploma to be removed from the agenda, justifying the need for the joint committee to look into the changes.
The Government intends to make this first amendment to the new nationality law, after recognizing “great unhappiness” in the formulation regarding the attribution of this title to descendants, which came into force five months ago.
The executive found a “misalignment” in the new nationality law, in force since August 22, 2023, which, among other points, stipulates that “an individual born in Cape Verdean territory, when they do not have another nationality” is considered Cape Verdean. ”.
The Government now proposes to change the wording of the law, stipulating that “the child of a Cape Verdean origin, born abroad, is also Cape Verdean if his or her birth appears in the Cape Verdean civil registry, either by registration or transcription”.
It also proposes that “the grandson, great-grandson or great-great-grandson born abroad of a Cape Verdean origin can acquire Cape Verdean nationality, if they declare that they want to be Cape Verdean”.
Under current law, recognition of the de facto union of a foreigner with a Cape Verdean national can be done in the court of the place of the last common residence of the cohabitants, but the Government now proposes that it can be requested from any diplomatic agent or consular agent in Cape Verde. competent green guy.
The current law allows the introduction of a new method of acquiring nationality for relevant reasons.
