Parliament approves in generally the proposal of the law that establishes the Statute for the Elderly

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The parliament unanimously approved this Thursday the proposal of the law that establishes the Statute for the Elderly, which aims to strengthen the social policies of State institutions regarding the elderly and guarantee a healthy and dignified old age.

The Secretary of State for Social Inclusion, Lídia Lima, said during the presentation of the aforementioned proposal that the Government of Cape Verde, since the IX Legislature, has been adopting a set of measures to strengthen public policies aimed at the most vulnerable groups and thereby ensuring the country’s sustainable development.

However, she stated that in Cape Verde, the social framework of the elderly is “worrying”, since the data indicate that the country has many elderly people living in poverty and about 3,000 live alone.

She highlighted the measures that the Government has implemented to overcome the effects of poverty among the elderly and improve their quality of life, recognizing that despite these measures there are many challenges to overcome.
