Africa-Press – Cape verde. The parliamentary group of the Movement for Democracy (MpD, in power) considered today, in the city of Praia, that the current Government is “the most social ever”, with a budget of 4.17 million contos for the sector.
MP Jaqueline Mota, elected by the Santo Antão constituency, spoke to the press on behalf of the party’s parliamentary group to review the preparations for the second plenary session, which will take place between the 12th and 14th.
The MP said that the debate with the Minister of State, Family, Inclusion and Social Development, Fernando Elísio Freire, comes at a “good time”, as the 2025 State Budget includes 4.17 million contos earmarked for the social pillar.
She highlighted some of the country’s gains at a social level and said that in 2022 the Government approved the national strategy for the eradication of extreme poverty by 2026 and created the social protection fund, called “Fundo Mais”, in 2023.
This fund now has a budget of 677 thousand contos in 2024, of which 561 thousand contos were allocated to the Social Inclusion Income (RSI).
According to the same source, the Government has earmarked 694 thousand contos for 2025, 80% of which will be used for social income transfers to families in Group 1 of the CSU and 20% for child and adolescent protection policies.
“These actions include the creation of day care centers aimed at promoting the well-being and comprehensive development of children and adolescents in situations of social vulnerability,” she said.
According to the parliamentarian, 11 day care centers are expected to open and operate by the end of the first half of this year in Salamansa (São Vicente), Tira Chapéu (Santiago) and Sal Rei (Boa Vista), all of which will already be equipped, and the rehabilitation of the works at the children’s emergency centers in Santiago Norte, Santa Catarina, Santo Antão and Boa Vista.
According to the Government, it will expand the coverage of the social pension to include all elderly people and people with deference from vulnerable families not covered by the contributory regime.
The MP also highlighted that, in relation to extreme poverty, Cape Verde recorded a significant drop in the third quarter of 2023 from 6.8% to 2.28% in the second quarter of 2024.
Regarding the MPs’ questions to the Minister of the Sea, Jorge Santos, Jaqueline Mota highlighted that this is “a good time”, as it will be an opportunity to clarify to Cape Verdeans and all fishing operators about the gains that the country has seen in terms of the maritime economy.
The ordinary session of the National Assembly for the month of February will take place from Wednesday, the 12th, to Friday, the 14th, in the city of Praia.
It will be marked by a debate with the Minister of State, Family, Inclusion and Social Development, Fernando Elísio Freire, by questions to the Government, which will be answered by the Minister of the Sea, Jorge Santos, in addition to the approval of projects and bills.
