Africa-Press – Cape verde. The President of the Republic, José Maria Neves, called this Sunday, in Paul, for “effective solidarity among all”, as a way to help people who, because of the drought, the pandemic and the war, have lost jobs and income.
The appeal arises from the fact that, at the moment, “the populations of all municipalities are going through situations of difficulties” that, according to the head of state, “have been accentuated with all these years of drought, with the pandemic and, now, with the consequences of the war in Ukraine”.
30 years of municipalism
José Maria Neves, who presided over the solemn session commemorating the day of the municipality of Paul and the local patron, Santo António das Pombas, delivered a speech focused on the achievements of democratic Local Power in Cape Verde, in the year in which the 30th anniversary of the its implementation in the country.
“Celebrating the day of a municipality is to celebrate municipalism in Cape Verde”, he said, adding that there are three decades of strong local and regional protagonism “which has contributed, on the one hand, to the strengthening of the institutions of Local Power and, on the other hand, on the other hand, to improve the quality of life of Cape Verdeans”.
In the case of Santo Antão, he said that municipalism had an “extra ingredient”, embodied in strong inter-municipal cooperation.

In his view, the “intense and productive” cooperation between the three municipalities on the island of Santo Antão is exemplary for the other municipalities and islands of Cape Verde.
The same says that this cooperation allowed the sharing of resources and development processes with gains in efficiency and effectiveness, benefiting the entire island.
José Maria Neves considered that, even in an environment of great scarcity of resources, Cape Verdean municipalities have made a huge effort to modernize their territory and support communities in sensitive areas with socio-economic impact.
