“Mercedes were more work”.
In line to say goodbye to the king, Band News found Afonso, a Cape Verdean emigrant in Brazil for 46 years, who was carrying a tribute: an autographed shirt and a medal offered by Pelé himself.
Afonso explains that he has worked for Pelé and his family since he was 15, as they used to go to his workshop.
the Mercedes
He says that the two Mercedes that Pelé had were the ones he worked on the most.
“The Mercedes were the ones that took the most work, they rarely needed maintenance, but when they came, it was a problem.
They came from Guarujá, in addition to the cars, I rescued Pelé’s father countless times in Acapulco with a broken car”, he comments, laughing.
Close relationship with Pelé’s family
He says he had a close relationship with Pelé’s family.
“I met his mother, Edinho, who always came to the workshop when he played for Santos.
His brother and father too, I already visited their tomb at the Memorial and now I intend to visit Pelé’s tomb as well”, he points out.
Afonso says that Pelé made him support Santos since Cape Verde, so much so that he met Santos before Brazil.
“I listened to Santos de Pelé and I knew what it was, I didn’t even know what Brazil was.
There I only knew Pelé, he was awesome, now he’s playing up there in the sky”, he says.
