PM Confident Cape Verde will be Removed from US Yellow List

Africa-Press – Cape verde. Prime Minister Ulisses Correia e Silva said today that he is confident that Cape Verde will leave the yellow list of entry restrictions into the United States and will remain a reference in relations with the US.

The governor’s statements were made to journalists on the sidelines of the International Conference on Personal Data Protection in the Age of Artificial Intelligence.

Ulisses Correia e Silva assured that the country is working to leave the list of 22 countries under yellow alert with regard to entry into the United States and stressed that the situation is temporary and depends on compliance with certain requirements.

“Itamaraty has already given very clear communication about this. It is a transitional position that depends on the fulfillment of some requirements,” he said.

The Head of Government assured that clarification has already been requested from the US State Department to find out exactly what the issues that were questioned were and to provide the necessary response.

“We are confident that we can also get off this list and make Cape Verde a country that, in relation to the United States, has been a reference,” he declared.

Rejecting any link between the measure and the change of administration in the US, the Prime Minister recalled that Cape Verde had previously been on a restrictive list due to issues related to the expatriation of convicted or repatriated citizens.

“It is important to remember that there was a time when Cape Verde was on the grey list regarding issues related to the expatriation of people in the United States who are convicted or repatriated for some reason and Cape Verde at that time did not meet all the requirements,” he explained.

The country, he continued, managed to overcome this situation by ensuring compliance with the requirements.

“I hope that if there is any incident, it can return to normal,” he concluded.

Last Friday, the 14th, The New York Times reported that the United States is considering imposing restrictions on the entry of citizens from several countries, including Cape Verde.

The archipelago is part of a list of 22 nations under yellow alert, having a period of 60 days to correct flaws in the issuance of documents, border control and sharing of information with Washington. If the requirements are not met, Cape Verdeans could face severe restrictions or even a complete ban on entry into the United States.

The decision is expected to be announced from March 21st. Among the Portuguese-speaking countries, in addition to Cape Verde, Angola and São Tomé and Príncipe are also on the yellow list, plus Equatorial Guinea, another member of the CPLP.
