Africa-Press – Cape verde. The delegation of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, in Porto Novo, estimates that around 700 farmers, in different agricultural valleys, have been covered since 2016 with new irrigation technologies.
According to Joel Barros, this fact has made irrigation water more profitable and increased the irrigated area in the municipality, as 698 farmers already use the drip irrigation system in Porto Novo, which has a coverage rate with this irrigation system of 60.5 percent (%).
However, the number of beneficiaries of the various drip irrigation installation programs in Porto Novo “far exceeds 700 farmers”, as there is no data relating to the period leading up to 2016, in which this irrigation system was installed in more than 62 hectares.
In the last eight years, more than 98 hectares have been covered, benefiting around 700 farmers.
There are already 160.8 hectares of agricultural land covered by the drip irrigation system throughout the municipality of Porto Novo, said the delegate from the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, who highlighted the impact of the subsidy program for the installation of drip irrigation in the county.
Within the scope of this program, which grants a 50% subsidy to farmers, the drip irrigation system has so far been installed on 19.7 hectares of agricultural land, covering 175 farmers, being considered “a success” in the municipality of Porto Novo.
