Africa-Press – Cape verde. The delegate of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment in the municipality of Porto Novo said today that the municipality currently has a drip irrigation coverage rate “much above the national average”.
Joel Barros told Inforpress that the penetration rate of drip irrigation in Porto Novo is around 57 percent (%), covering 579 farmers, spread over 151 hectares of land, a coverage that, he added, “far exceeds the national average”.
The delegate was speaking to Inforpress regarding the statements made on Monday, 24, by the vice president of the Independent and Democratic Cabo Verdean Union (UCID, opposition), José Graça, about the “difficulties of farmers” in accessing the subsidy program for the acquisition of drip irrigation equipment.
The delegate of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment clarified that there has been “a good adherence rate” of farmers in relation to the subsidy program, which, in the case of Porto Novo, has already benefited 124 farmers spread over 14 hectares of land, with several processes in progress at this time.
Therefore, Joel Barros denied that there are “complaints” of the farmers regarding difficulties in joining this program, inviting the UCID`s vice president to visit the localities and contact agricultural producers to learn about “the advances” that Porto Novo is having in the agricultural sector.
